Critical Media Literacy & Digital Citizenship

Christine Ong, a researcher at CRESST in UCLA’s School of Education and Information Studies focuses her research on how young people use technology like social media to learn new information and ways to promote kindness online. Students are bombarded with information from many sources from books to popular apps like YouTube and TikTok. Many online sources offer the ability to communicate with others. Studies have found that individuals are less likely to be kind or empathetic in their comments when online vs. in person. This study explores ways to promote more constructive discourse and in particular the role of taking others’ perspectives as a form of empathy.
